Water Conservation/Pollution Prevention
- With the Chesapeake Bay so close to our campus, students at the preschool, elementary and middle school levels learn about the precious resource of water. There are maps on the walls of our classrooms that show the bay and its tributaries, its peninsulas, shorelines, and land masses. Students have a concept of the big picture and practical, everyday actions they can take. “We turn off water faucets when we soap up our hands,” said a class of 3/4th graders. “We take shorter showers at home, and we turn off the water while we brush our teeth,” they added. It is not unusual for 1st graders to speak about permeable and impermeable surfaces.
- “We do not litter,” said elementary and middle schoolers in response to questions about what they can do to prevent pollution. As preschoolers go on their “walkabouts’ around the campus, they discuss what plants and grasses help filter runoff and snow melt. Students decorate and maintain rain barrels around the campus. There is an annual campus clean-up in which students do the main effort.Students bring lunch in reusable containers, including water bottles, and sort trash into recyclables and compost.
