“Found Art”
Grades 7th and 8th
Art Class with Sue Maloney
Objective:
Students will be able to:
· Learn how to reuse found objects and recyclables.
· They will learn how to repurpose what we would normally get rid of.
Essential Questions:
· How can we use our disposable objects to make them into three dimensional art?
Material:
· Items brought from home such as plastic bottles, cans, papers, beads, fabric, wire, string, containers, and anything that is found.
· Old items such as old clocks, computers, radios, machines and anything that can be taken apart and repurposed.
· We used glue and wire and paint to construct and enhance our art.
Subjects Covered/Skills:
· We talked about how we waste our resources and can find new ways to use our normally “wasted” resources.
· They learned how to look at things in a different way such as using a soda can for a body or using gears for legs.
Activity:
· We collected and sculpted three dimensional art pieces such as animals, robots or sculptures that were made from cutting apart and disassembling found and recyclable objects.
Assessment/Celebration:
· The sculptures were displayed at our Fine Arts Night in the spring. We called them “Found Art.”
Resources/Partnerships:
· We looked at and got ideas from “Found Artists” such as Harriet Mead who does animals from scrap metal. We also looked at other contemporary artists to see how they used the materials to repurpose them into art.
Success Criteria:
· The students learned a lot about different materials and how they can be manipulated.
· The students were able to show their art work at the art show and received great positive feedback on their sculptures.
Time Line and Budget:
· This project took about 6 art classes and due to the fact that we used found objects our expenses were kept to only glue.
Specific Events:
· Displayed in the “Spring Fine Arts Night.”
