Kindergarten

Objective:
SWBAT identify major habitat zones, define and use key vocabulary associated with the environment, and gain an insight into the diversity of life on earth. This unit introduces students to key terms and concepts that will encounter again in their science/environmental studies.
Essential Questions:
What is a “habitat”? Who Grows Up in these different habitats?
Material:
Series of books: Who Grows Up in the Oceans; Who Grows Up in the Desert; Who Grows Up in the Rain Forest; Who Grows Up in the Snow; Who Grows Up on the Farm (Longenecker, Theresa. Minneapolis, MN: Picture Window Books, circa 2005).

Description of Habitats, Listening, Inquiry, Recall, Interesting Facts, Identify with Growing Up, Animals within Habitats
Activity:
Read a book aloud. Play “Recall Game” when children gain points by naming the animal. Children can also gain points by identifying meaning or giving an example of terms and facts. Examples of words to know: den, litter, prey, rodent, webbed feet, krill, lichen, migrate, tusk, egg tooth, hatchling, calf, cub, pup, chick, leveret
Assessment:
Question and response based on read-aloud; recall from previous books; reading and explain words to know from whiteboard.

These books are available for check-out after class reading (they are popular). Additional books available on specific animals. Map of world showing location of habitats and where different animals live.
