Student-Driven Sustainability Overview
As a school with small classes and close student-teacher relationships, St. Martin’s expects and enables its students to take active responsibility for learning and action. We’re a green school because our students are green. They care about the water quality of the Bay. They care about conserving energy in our school building. They care about recycling. They care about our school’s campus and salad garden. They care about animals, from oysters to ospreys, from bearded dragons to horseshoe crabs. The mission statement of our Environmental Club shows the energy and commitment of our students. Three of our “Top 5 Accomplishments” closely involve student action. They are: #2 Student Leadership: Environmental Club and Recycling Management; #3 Campus Environment: Salad Garden; and #4 Oyster Recovery.
As an Episcopal school, we value inclusion. Our school slogan, Learners, Leaders, Friends, is enacted through activities that involve all the students in each grade and division. As a preschool through 8th grade school, we have a Buddy Program that brings together the older and younger students.
Our student-driven sustainability practices fall into four categories: 2.1: Water Conservation/Pollution Prevention; 2.2: Energy Conservation; 2.3: Solid Waste Reduction; and 2.4: Habitat Restoration. In each category, we highlight a range of actions/examples. For an idea of the depth and breadth of our sustainability practices, please keep in mind our lesson plans and activities as they pertain to these categories.
