Upcycling
Art, 7th and 8th Grades
STEAM project (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)
Chihuly-like Sculptures
Dear 7th and 8th grade families,
We are doing a “STEAM” unit in art and science on glass. Mrs. Ready and I are combining the art and science of glass. In art we will be studying ways to use glass as an art form. One of the artists that we will be studying is Dale Chihuly. He is a glass blower who makes sculptures out of blown glass. We will not be able to use glass to do “Chihuly like sculptures,” so we will be using plastic bottles. We will be sculpting the bottles by coloring, cutting and bending with a heat source.
I am sending this to ask you to save bottles that we can upcycle to use for this project. Please save water, soda and any other clear or colored plastic bottles (no milk bottles please). All different sizes would be great. You can send them in anytime. We will be starting the project sometime in February. The students can drop them in the art room. I will have a bucket in there to collect them. Please rinse them out before sending them in.
Please contact me with any questions.
Thank you for your help,
