Green School Reaccreditation
2nd Grade (with participation from K, 1st, 3rd, and 4th)
(Spring and Fall of the academic year)
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
· prepare, plant, and harvest a “crop”
· how to use and care for tools
· use marigolds as natural repellants
· learn proportions of water and angles of sunlight for growth
· learn how to weed a garden
· learn when and how to harvest and replant.
Essential Questions:
· Where does our food come from?
· How can we keep our environment and our bodies healthy?
Material:
Earth science, agriculture, growing cycles of plants, observational data collection of sunlight, rain, and temperature, measurement, prediction.
Activities:
Second graders, with help from first grade friends, plant the seeds and seedlings. The 2nd grade class measures growth and collects data on sunlight and temperatures.
Assessment/Celebration:
Students are assessed on their activities. We have a Harvest Day Celebration at one of our regularly scheduled Wednesday Salad Bars.
Resources/Partnerships:
Initiated upon receipt of the Bill James Environmental Grant, under the aegis of the Keep Maryland Beautiful program sponsored by the Maryland Environmental Trust, funded by the State Highway Administration.

- Raised beds were constructed. Soil, seeds and seedlings are acquired as needed each season. We purchase capillary-watering seedling-growing kits as required.
- We purchase marigolds and seeds for marigolds (which kindergarteners plant in cups in their classroom) as natural deer-repellent.
