Green School Lesson Plan
PK-4s
All School Year
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Objective: Part of our back to school orientation is to incorporate recycling into our classroom values and expected behaviors.
Essential Questions: How can we reduce, reuse, and recycle in our classroom/school?
Material: 2 bins have been placed in the classroom. 1 labeled “Plastic” and the other labeled “Paper”. Various materials have been collected and added to our “Recycle” bulletin board to show the children what can be recycled. Parents have been notified and are enthusiastically using reusable Tupperware in packing lunches as well as sending reusable water bottles to use during snack and lunch.
Subject/Skills: Life Skills. Reading, cooperation, thoughtfulness, leadership, discussion
Activity: The children bring in reusable water bottles to use during snack and lunchtime. Their lunches are backed in reusable containers instead of plastic bags. If there is paper and plastic in their lunches, it is put into our plastic and paper recycling bins in the classroom. The leader of the day then takes the bags to the larger recycle bin in the preschool kitchen area. We also display an ever changing recycling bulletin board to help show the children what can be recycled.
Assessment: Daily use of water bottles and reusable containers. Students are encouraged to recognize the difference between paper or plastic and make the correct decision on how to dispose.
